The Highest Trending Topics on FileCatalyst in 2022

Just like with the high levels of speed FileCatalyst uses to blitz files across the digital highway, this year passed by in the blink of an eye. With the new year drawing closer by the second, organizations are finalizing  their new plans and looking to a year of growth. One way to achieve this growth is to invest in a fast file transfer solution, and like a New Year’s resolution to lose some weight, your organization can shave some serious time sending your data.

FileCatalyst is a fast file transfer solution and a part of Fortra’s portfolio of cybersecurity products. Fast file transfer offers increased efficiency and productivity using file transfer acceleration technology. File transfer acceleration solutions move data using custom protocols, often built on top of UDP, and in lieu of the traditional TCP method.

We here at Fortra are also looking forward to the new year and we’ve collected some of our most popular fast file transfer stories from the past year. These stories were the highest-trending topics among readers, and if you’re looking to learn more about fast file transfer, this is the perfect place to start.

How Big Are Movie Files?

Today, there are a number of things that can affect the size of a video file. Computer-generated effects and high-resolution images all increase the size of the file, and the bigger the file is, the longer it can take to download. Add in the fact that most movies today utilize CGI and are shot in high definition, then it’s likely rare for you to find a file size less than 900MB.

If your organization frequently needs to transfer movie files, the following article contains a breakdown of the factors that affect file size, the common names for these files, and tips for how to improve your own file transfer agility.

What is IPERF and How to Use it

iPerf, which is short for Internet Performance Working Group, is an open-source speed test and network performance measurement tool. It creates TCP and UDP streams, and sends traffic from one host to another, then reports the maximum bandwidth to the user. This allows users to determine network throughput and top bandwidth speed.

Testing network throughput with iPerf is usually the first step in determining network speed and functionality. We typically recommend using a different version – IPERF3 – with FileCatalyst, but if you’d like to know more about IPERF and its various uses, check out the link below.

How to Measure Network and Disk Throughput with IPERF3

IPERF3 is a version of IPERF that is widely used for measurements of the maximum achievable throughput between point-to-point connections, and it can be used with TCP and UDP protocols. It can also be used to identify bottlenecks or problems that might occur during transfer, so it’s not uncommon to use IPERF3 to test your system before installing a solution like FileCatalyst.

We recommend having clean IPERF3 logs before installing FileCatalyst because IPERF3 will save a lot of time configuring the firewall, storage, and FileCatalyst itself. For an explanation on how to install IPERF3 and what that will require, check out the article below.

How to Change Emulation Mode in Internet Explorer to Load TransferAgent Properly

TransferAgent is FileCatalyst’s alternative to Java Applets. TransferAgent allows users to upload and download complex folders, automatically retry transfers after a dropped connection, and, of course, allows for the use of our UDP-based file transfer acceleration. Internet browsers such as Google Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer have functionality with TransferAgent, and some users found that the application “stalls” at the “Launching TransferAgent” loading screen for Internet Explorer.

Older versions of Internet Explorer have a harder time loading modern JavaScript pages and in some cases, the Internet Explorer or Edge browser is dropped into compatibility mode. To help troubleshoot this, we released a guide on what to do should this happen to you. Check it out and follow the steps if you need some help.
